How to Build a Global Team and Do Right by Everyone

The staffing arrangements that last protect both sides at once. Here’s what that looks like and how to spot an agency that means it.

There is a vital question business owners need to ask before they hire anyone overseas: Am I doing right by the person on the other end of this?

And honestly, if that isn’t important to you, I don’t think we’re the right staffing agency for you. I’ve learned over 11 years that global staffing arrangements that actually last are the ones that protect both sides at once. The business gets skilled, reliable help, and the worker gets real benefits, fair pay, and support they can count on. When either side is being squeezed, the whole thing eventually comes apart. Treating the person well is what makes the model work in the first place.

Isn’t Cheaper Help Just Someone Else Getting Squeezed?

That is the assumption, and I understand why. When the price looks too good, it is reasonable to wonder who is absorbing the difference. So here is how we make sure the answer is nobody. Our virtual employees receive health and dental benefits for their families at no cost to you, and health care is the benefit that tops nearly every list. Employers rank it their most important offering, with 88 percent calling it extremely or very important. We also use a flat fee. When you decide your virtual employee has earned a raise, all of it goes to them, never split with us. I never felt it made sense to take a bigger cut simply because someone is doing good work for you.

What Does Treated With Dignity Actually Look Like?

It looks like specifics, not slogans. The children of our virtual employees can receive scholarships through HireSmart Cares, our nonprofit, so they can attend private school. Our people get leadership development training and a team that checks in on them. When Typhoon Rai hit the Philippines, we sent financial assistance to 31 affected employees and helped them rebuild their homes. That same instinct is why I believe leaders should invest beyond their own walls. One real estate executive described what her remote team had become to her: “They’re my other family, and I want to fly to the Philippines and see them and have a big party.” You do not build that kind of relationship on an arrangement where someone is being used.

Why This Is Good for the Business, Too

None of this is generosity for its own sake, and I would not pretend otherwise. A person who is genuinely cared for is a person who stays and keeps doing excellent work. Pull the support away and you have a flight risk, and losing a strong employee is costly to replace. Invest in the person, and you get the opposite: a person who stays, fluent in your business, and improving every year. We put our people through a screen—only one percent of applicants pass and 40 hours of certification before they ever touch your work, and then we build the conditions for them to want to stay. A leader in community association management put the payoff plainly: “She really is a stellar employee and a loving human being. She is such an important part of our team.”

How to Tell If an Agency Does Right by Its People

You can hold any staffing agency to this standard, whether or not you ever work with us. Before you sign with anyone, ask:

  • Do the workers receive real benefits like health coverage, and who pays for them?
  • If you give the worker a raise, does the agency take a cut of it?
  • Who handles taxes and compliance on the worker’s side, and is the arrangement legal in their country?
  • What happens for that worker in a crisis or an emergency?

An agency that does right by its people will answer all four without flinching. If the answers come back vague, that tells you something about how sustainable the arrangement really is and about who is carrying the real cost underneath it.

The first virtual employee we ever hired still works with us today, because both sides of that arrangement have always been treated like they matter. You can build a global team and be genuinely proud of how the person on the other end is treated. In my experience, the fair version is also the durable one, for the people you rely on and for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it ethical to hire virtual employees overseas? It can be, and it comes down to how the arrangement is structured. An ethical setup gives the worker real benefits, fair pay, legal compliance in their own country, and genuine support. When those pieces are in place, hiring overseas creates opportunity on both ends rather than advantage for one side.

Do virtual employees hired through an agency receive benefits, and who pays for them? It depends on the agency, so ask directly. HireSmart virtual employees receive health and dental benefits for their families, and their children can receive scholarships through the HireSmart Cares nonprofit. These are covered within the flat fee, at no additional cost to the client.

Does hiring overseas mean paying someone unfairly low wages? Not when it is done right. Fair compensation in the worker’s own economy, combined with benefits and support, can be meaningful and competitive there. The warning sign is an arrangement where the low price is made possible by stripping away benefits, protections, or compliance.

How can I tell if a virtual staffing agency treats its workers well? Ask four questions before signing: whether the workers get real benefits and who pays for them, whether the agency takes a cut of any raise you give, who handles the worker’s taxes and legal compliance, and what support exists for that worker in an emergency. Clear answers signal a sustainable arrangement.

Who handles taxes and legal compliance for an overseas virtual employee? With a reputable agency, the agency does. HireSmart manages payroll, benefits, and compliance with both U.S. and Philippine labor laws, and employee taxation is handled on the Filipino end. Hiring directly with no agency shifts all of that onto the business.

Does treating the worker well make the arrangement more expensive for the business? It tends to make it more durable, not more expensive. Cared-for employees stay longer and perform better, which lowers turnover and the cost of constantly replacing people. The support underneath the worker is what protects the business’s investment.
