Is Your Business As Focused As It Could Be?

Back to Blog POsts

I have many important words in my life: love, respect, gratitude, sincerity, perseverance, commitment — I could go on. But here’s one more: focus.

Am I paying proper attention to what’s most important? I aim to answer that question with a resounding “Yes!” as much as possible. That means a one-on-one meeting with a friend, a client, and even my moments alone with my little buddy, Adrian, my pet schnauzer, are about focus. Let me understand what’s going on. Help me see your point of view. Life just feels richer the more I do this. The older I get, the more I focus on “focus.”

I pick a monthly theme for all these writings, and this month’s theme is processes. Think of it this way: How do you arrange all your organization’s energy toward your big purpose? It’s all about focus.

Are You Ready for Life’s Curveballs? Discover How to Prepare Your Business

First, you must know your intent, your purpose. What is your business’s ultimate aim? What impact do you want to have on your customers, your industry, and the world? This is your guiding light, informing every decision, every process, and every interaction.

With that in mind, here are five practical tips for bringing laser focus to your business processes:

  1. Map Processes to Your Purpose: Take a close look at your critical processes and ask: How does this directly contribute to our overarching purpose? If the connection isn’t clear, it might be time to re-evaluate and realign. Every process should have a clear line of sight to your ultimate aim.

Want to Make Your Own Good Luck?

  1. Simplify, Simplify, Simplify: Complexity is the enemy of focus. Look for opportunities to streamline your processes, eliminating unnecessary steps, approvals, and handoffs. The more straightforward your processes are, the easier it is for everyone to stay focused on what matters.
  1. Automate the Routine: Manual, repetitive tasks can drain focus and energy. Wherever possible, automate these routine elements of your processes using technology tools. This frees your team to focus on the strategic, high-impact work that drives your business forward. Whatever can’t be automated, we can help you with that. That’s our specialty.

Thinking of Adding a Global Flair to Your Local Team?

  1. Establish Clear Metrics: What gets measured gets managed. Establish clear, purpose-driven metrics for each of your key processes. This helps everyone stay focused on the right outcomes and lets you track progress over time. Just be sure your metrics align with your primary aim, not just measuring activity for activity’s sake.
  1. Make Focus a Habit: Focus isn’t a one-and-done thing. It requires ongoing effort and a commitment to continuous improvement. Make process focus a regular part of your team’s routine — something you discuss in meetings, celebrate wins, and constantly strive for. The more you “focus on focus,” the more natural it becomes.

Want More Shining Lights on Your Staff?

Bringing focus to your processes is a journey, not a destination. It requires ongoing attention, adjustment, and realignment as your business grows and evolves. However, the payoff in efficiency, impact, and, ultimately, success is well worth the effort.
