Worried About Missing Out on Important Moments?

Back to Blog POsts

Oh, wait! I need to check on Mom and Dad! How are they?

As we grind through our busy schedules, we’re hit with inner jolts like that. I love my parents. I want them happy and well. I’m also super busy with work, but I want to keep my priorities in order. And my parents are a priority for me.

Maybe it’s your kids, spouse, parents, girlfriend, or boyfriend. You have your top priority people, and you must make an effort to carve out time for them because you’re running on a treadmill that is cranked dangerously high.

As business owners, we’re not just responsible for our treadmill — we’re in charge of the whole gym! We’ve got employees to manage, clients to satisfy, and a never-ending to-do list that could make even the most organized person’s head spin.

Burnout: Why it Happens and How to Reduce It

It’s easy to get caught up in the daily grind and let those top-priority relationships slip to the back burner.

I’m thinking of all the “back to business” tasks ahead this month. Vacations are over, and the daily grind speeds up. So, how do we find balance? How do we ensure we’re giving our all to our businesses while nurturing the relationships that sustain us? Here are a few tips:

  • Schedule It In: Just like you’d block off time for an important meeting or project, block off time for your top priority people. Put it on your calendar, set reminders, and treat it as non-negotiable. Make it a recurring appointment, whether it’s a weekly date night with your spouse, a monthly lunch with your parents, or daily playtime with your kids.

  • Be Fully Present: Be all there when you’re with your top priority people. Put away your phone, close your laptop, and give them your undivided attention. Resist the urge to check emails or take “just one quick call.” Show them that they have your complete focus and presence.

Here Are 10 Ways You can get Your Life Back

  • Communicate Your Needs: Let your loved ones know what’s on your plate and what your work demands are. Be honest about when you need to focus and when you’ll be available. On the flip side, ask them what they need from you. Open communication can prevent many hurt feelings and misunderstandings.

  • Delegate and Automate: Look for ways to take tasks off your plate so you can free up more time for your top priorities. Can you delegate specific responsibilities to your team? Automate repetitive tasks? Outsource things that someone else could handle? The more you streamline your work, the more bandwidth you’ll have for what matters most.

  •  Set Boundaries: Just as you set boundaries with your work (like no emails after 7 p.m. or no work on weekends), set boundaries with your personal life, too. Let your team know when you’re unavailable because you’re dedicating time to your family or friends. And stick to those boundaries as much as possible.
